Cuilapa-Barbarena volcanic field is located at an intersection between the Jalpatagua fault and Santa Rosa de Lima caldera.

Cuilapa-Barbarenca cinder cone field contains 70 monogenetic olivine basalt cones, which are mostly less than 100 m high. Most of the cones are located on the southern and western rims of the Santa Rosa de Lima caldera.
