stratovolcano

Klyuchevskoy is Kamchatka's highest and most active volcano. The volcano contains a 700 m wide summit crater. Between 500 m and 3600 m elevation there are about 80 lateral explosive vents and scoria cones.

Klyuchevskoy volcano erupts about one half of the total juvenile annual output of all 70 volcanoes of the Kuril-Kamchatka volcanic arc. It is one of the main volcanoes of the Kamchatka peninsula.

Nearby towns include: Klyuchi (30 km north), Kozyrevsk (47 km west), Esso (120 km west), Ust’-Kamchatsk (120 km east), Milkovo (200 km south-west), and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (360 km SSW).

2009 Eruption
A lava flow has begun down the SE slope of Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka in mid November 2009 after the crater overfilled. The volcano continued to throw red-hot rocks to a height of 200 meters above the crater. The current eruption started in August 2009 after several months of inactivity.

An eruption of Klyuchevskoy volcano began on Saturday 3rd October 2009. Incandescent lava was ejected to a height of 100 m above the crater at 1-6 minute intervals. One hundred earthquakes are being registered every 24 hours.

2007 Eruptions
Strombolian eruptions began at Klyuchevskoy volcano on 15th February 2007, ejecting lava to a height of 300 m above the crater. On 26th February ash fell on the village of Klyuchi, 30 km NNE of the volcano. On 22nd April Lava flows and mudflows descended the NW flank. Residents in Kliuchi heard explosions during 3-6 May, and reported ashfall on 4th May. In May, lava flows melted ice on the east flank of the volcano, producing large steam plumes. Strombolian and Vulcanian summit eruptions occurred in May and June. On 29th June, ash plumes drifted east over 2,000 km. Eruption finished by 20th July.

2005 Eruptions
Strombolian eruptions commenced on 20th January, with bombs ejected to a height of 300 m. On 1st February, a mudflow carried large blocks and trees 6 km down the NW flank into the Kruten'kaya River. On 21st February, a lava flow melted a large section of Ehrman glacier. On 23rd March, ash was ejected to a height of 7 km, and drifted 80 km NW of the volcano. Eruptions of the volcano in January-May 2005 resulted in the volcano sinking by 50m.

1990 Eruptions
On 1st February 1990 ash fell on the Bering Islands 375 km SE of the volcano. In February a new vent was observed at 4,500 m elevation on the NE slope of the Apakhonchich valley, on the upper SE flank of Klyuchevskoy.

1985 Eruptions
On 1-2 December, a 50 m wide lava flow melted glacial ice, producing a mudflow that traveled 35 km to the Kamchatka River. On 1st December eruption column rose to a height of 5.2 km in 6 minutes.

1980 Eruptions
Both summit and flank eruptions occurred at Klyuchevskoy volcano in early 1980. On 6th March, a fissure more than 1 km long opened on the NE flank, which emitted a lava flow the following day.

1737 Eruption
An eruption of Klyuchevskoy volcano in 1737 was described as "a horrible fire". Fishermen near the volcano "were prepared to die any hour".
