Maderas volcano is located on SE end of Ometepe island in Lake Nicaragua. The volcano contains 800-m-wide summit crater, occupied by Laguna de Maderas.

The SW side of the volcano has been affected by large-scale slumping. Numerous pyroclastic cones are located on the lower NE flank of Maderas volcano down to Lake Nicaragua.

1996 Lahar
On 27 September 1996 a lahar destroyed the village of El Corozal (3 km from Maderas Volcano), killing 6 people.
