Indonesian Earthquake (Magnitude 8.4)

A magnitude 8.4 earthquake hit near the south coast of Sumatra on Wednesday 12th September at 06:10 pm local time. A tsunami was generated. The epicentre was within 200 km of numerous volcanoes including Kunyit, Belirang-Beriti, Bukit Daun, Kaba, and Dempo. Earthquakes of this magnitude may disrupt nearby volcanoes.

Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano (Tanzania)

A significant eruption has occurred at Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in Tanzania. Ash emissions have originated from a new cinder cone at the summit. A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit 18 km NE of the volcano yesterday at 5:15 pm local time. Satellite images suggest increased volcanic activity since 21st August.

Mt Etna Volcano (Italy)

After one week of Strombolian activity at SE crater at Mt Etna, there was a change to lava fountains on 4th September. Lava fountains continued for four hours and lava flowed towards the Valle del Bove. Volcanic ash on the runway closed Catania airport on Tuesday 4th September.

Strombolian eruptions continue at Mt Etna volcano in Italy. On the eastern side of SE crater there were explosions every second of incandescent material and ash.
