Tungurahua Volcano, Ecuador

An eruption of Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador occurred on 28th November 2011. An eruption column reached a height of 3 km above the crater. During the evening explosions of incandescent material was observed rising 300 m above the crater, and extended a distance for 500 m from the rim. The eruption began suddenly and generated pyroclastic flows down the flank of the volcano.

Galeras Volcano, Colombia

Galeras volcano in colombia was raised to alert level 2 (second highest level) on 24th november 2011 after an increase in seismicity. Tornillo earthquakes were recorded are were similar to those which preceded eruptions between 1992 and 2010. There has been a decrease in emission of sulphur dioxide and reduced fumarolic activity which may indicate blocked conduits. Interaction between hydrothermal and magmatic material may lead to ash emission or explosive eruptions.

Nyamuragira Volcano, Democratic Republic of Congo

Eruption at Nyamuragira volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo has created fissures and lava flows which extend over a distance of 11.5 km. Lava fountains continue and lava flows are advancing northwards and have reached within 5 km of Kalengera-Tongo road. The rate of advance of the lava flow has decreased over the past week. The eruption has not affected Gorillas in the Virunga Ranges which are located 20 km from the eruption site. There has been no effect on the Tongo Chimpanzees.

Hierro Volcano, Canary Islands

Earthquake activity has increased at El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands. A magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred at 15:32 hr (UT) on 18th November in the El Golfo region. The focus was at a depth of 23 km. Between midnight and 14:30 hr there were 32 earthquakes. Beaches between Puerto Naos and La Restinga have been closed due gas emissions. A 4 km radius around the eruption site is closed to navigation. Area of upwelling is over 200 m in diameter.

Nyamuragira Volcano, Democratic Republic of Congo

Eruptions continue at Nyamuragira volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lava fountains have reached a height of 400 m and a new cone has been formed. The eruption occurred from a 500m-1000m long fissure which runs perpendicular to the Albertine rift. A lava flow extends north from the fissure along relatively flat land. Satellite images show a large sulphur dioxide plume extending west of the eruption site.

Hierro Volcano, Canary Islands

Underwater eruptions continue at El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands. Beaches at Puerto Naos and Tacorón were closed due to the emission of toxic gases. Two felt earthquakes were registered on the island at 18:17 and 18:41 on 9th November.

Nyamuragira Volcano, Democratic Republic of Congo

A flank eruption has begun at Nyamuragira volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The eruption began on the evening of 6th November 2011. A 1 km long fissure has opened with lava fountains. Park rangers were the first to report the eruption last night. A sky glow was seen by observers in Goma during the night and this morning a large plume was visible.

Hierro Volcano, Canary Islands

Geyser-like eruptions have broken the ocean surface at El Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands. The eruptions plume contained ash, magmatic material and gas and reached a height of 20 m. Geyser-like eruptions began on 6th November and occurred strongly every 30-60 minutes. Strong smell of gas was noticed by residents near the coast. On the evening of 6th November ash and steam from the eruption site reached a height of 100 m. The volcano is possibly in a transition between submarine and Surtseyan eruption style. The bubbling at the eruption site is caused by the release of magma generated gases.

Hierro Volcano, Canary Islands

Earthquakes have increased at El Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands. This indicates continued submarine eruptions at the volcano. On 2nd November at 18:10 UT there was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake with a focus at depth of 23 km in El Golfo Bay. The earthquake was followed by strong harmonic tremor. On 3rd November there were new areas of yellow-green stained water above the eruption site. There are reports of a lack of marine life within a 1.5 km radius of the eruption site. On 3rd November there was bubbling water above the eruption site and areas of muddy water. On 4th November between midnight and 8:30 UT there were 15 earthquakes greater than magnitude 1.5. The volcano remains at RED alert.

Hudson Volcano, Chile

The alert level at Hudson volcano, Chile has been reduced to level 4 (out of a maximum 5) after a less than one earthquake was recorded per hour. The minor eruption on the 26th October has finished. No sulphur dioxide was reported at the crater. A 45 km exclusion zone remains in place around the volcano, as eruptions are still possible.
