Purico volcano is located in northern Chile, 13 km south of the border with Bolivia. The volcano consists of several stratovolcanoes - Cerro Toco, Cerro Chascón de Purico and Cerro Aspero. The volcano is composed of lava domes, and lava flows. Alitar maar at the SE shows solfatara activity.

The volcano contains numerous astronomical instruments including, Atacama Large Millimeter Array, Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, Atacama Cosmology Telescope, Atacama Submillimeter Telescope, and NANTEN2 Observatory.
