The volcano located in the NE part of an eroded volcanic range. Eruptions at Salak volcano in historical times have been phreatic.
The two summit craters are considered extinct. An active crater is located on western flank at an elevation of 1400 m.


In July 2007, six school children were killed by suspected gas poinoning at Salak volcano.
