Shiribetsu is located SE of Yotei volcano in SW Hokkaido.
The 1.5 km diameter summit crater is breached to the west.

The evolution of the Shiribetsu volcanic complex is similar to the ignimbrite shield volcanoes in the central Andes. The volcano is possibly the first identified ignimbrite shield volcano in an island arc setting.
