Description
Histols
High in organic matter. Found on wet, poorly drained slopes, ridges and mountain tops. 14.3% land area.
Spodosols
Acid and leached. Found on wet mountain slopes. 0.6% land area.
Oxisols
Highly weathered. Found on smooth gentle slopes. 5.1% land area.
Vertisols
High in clay. Found in level areas. 0.8% land area.
Aridisols
Dry soils. Found in low rainfall areas. 1.2% land area.
Ultisols
Contain silicate clays. Found on valley edges. 2.5% land area.
Mollisols
Soft due to organic matter. Located in grassy and forested areas. 2.3% land area.
Alfisols
Similar to Ultisols but found on steeper slopes. 0.2% land area.
Inceptisols
Poorly developed substrate horizons. Recent volcanic deposits. 24.4% land area.
Entisols
No subsurface horizon development. Beaches and recent volcanic ash deposits. 1.1% land area.
