The volcano is located over 100 km SE of Quito.
It is an isolated cone about 50 km east of the main eastern range of the Andes.
The volcano is visible from a large surrounding area.

Sumaco has a symmetrical composite morphology, and there are reports of three explosive eruptions, the most recent in 1933.
