Volcanoes are one of several environmental factors which contribute to thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid cancers occurs independently of endemic goiter, based on epidemiologic and histologic evidence.

THe specific etiologic agent has not yet been identified. High levels of thyroid cancer occur in Iceland and hawaii. There is possibly a carcinogenic agent in the lava, and a possible mode of action on humans through fish products.
