Vanuatu contains regularly active volcanoes, which include Ambae, Ambrym, Lopevi, and Yasur. In 2009 Gaua volcano erupted after many years of dormancy.
The islands lie on a north-south subduction zone which stretches from Matthew and Hunter islands in the south to Tinakula volcano in the Solomon Islands in the north.
