Deep
Ocean Hydrothermal Vents - John Seach
Submarine hydrothermal
vents are the exit points for the convection of seawater within the crust.
They are driven
by the interaction of seawater and submarine volcanoes.
The systems have 3 parts
Recharge Zone
- seawater percolates down through the crust and is slowly heated.
Reaction Zone
- high-temperature zone where fluid equilibrates with hot rock.
Upflow Zone
- where buoyant fluids ascend rapidly to the seafloor.
Locations
of Active Submarine Hydrothermal Vents
More than 35
active submarine hydrothermal vent sites have been located and sampled.
Mid Atlantic,
Eastern Pacific, Hawaii, Western Pacific, Society islands, Red Sea.
