The island is the northern most of the South Sandwich islands. The volcano contains two parasitic cones on the east side.
Zavodovski Island contains two million Chinstrap penguins and the most northerly breeding location for Antarctic Fulmars.

A magnitude 5 earthquake hit 25 km NNE of Zavodovski Island on 15th August 2009. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit 30 km NNW of the island on 4th April 2009.
